Headshots on a white background
The Board of Directors and staff of Westerly, Rhode Island’s Granite Theatre was in need of a fresh round of headshots on a white background for their marketing and fundraising materials.
Luckily for us, their staff members and team of volunteers were in the process of giving the stage a fresh coat of bright white paint, which made it an ideal location for their group headshot session. I always plan on setting up my own background kit but finding a good background on site is always a plus.
The advantages of white backgrounds for headshots
One of the many advantages of a white background for headshots is its universal availability; a white wall can be found just about anywhere. This one happened to be on a stage; a perfect match for the staff and board of directors of a theatre.
Everyone’s headshot looks good in front of a bright white background. White backgrounds complement all ages, skin tones, hair colors and professions. It’s a timeless, universally appealing look for classic, vibrant headshots.
Bright white is also a very versatile headshot background. It works well in digital formats like websites, email icons and social media profiles.
Headshots on white backgrounds print well, too. Check out the page I created for The Granite Theatre’s playbill. This is a great way to show off my work and recognize the people that make The Granite Theatre an integral part of Westerly’s creative community.
Doing the work
Once we decided on a good location on stage for the headshots, I built my portable headshot studio and we got to work.
We scheduled the session during one their board meetings, which is usually an ideal time for everyone to be together in one place. Everyone took a turn in front of the camera before they got down to their official business. A typical headshot during a group headshot session only takes a few minutes so it’s easy to take care of a lot of people in a small amount of time.
Group Headshot Sessions can be a lot of fun
It was a fun session. Especially with this great crew of creative people that care about the Theatre and the community it serves. There was ample opportunities for goofing off and I find that this fun, laid back atmosphere makes for better headshots.
Some people are intimidated by the idea of having their headshot taken. The overall atmosphere created by the photographer and encouragement from their colleagues can go a long way to putting people at ease.
On Site Image Review
Having the images available for immediate review on site is another advantage for the photographer and headshot recipients. People can see how great they look, select their favorite headshots and celebrate their coworkers.
So many organizations can benefit from a group headshot session on white backgrounds. If this is a good fit for your team, I can bring my own background kit to your office or we can find a good wall and build from there.
